What is visual merchandising?
Visual merchandising is the creative placement and presentation of products in retail settings, in order to attract attention, inspire the customer and increase sales. But there’s a difference between merchandising and visual merchandising. Below is one of my favorite examples.
Merchandising is presenting yor products in a clear, organized way. It shows an accurate representation of what products you have to offer, and is easily navigated and shopped. See an example on the right: a fertilizer shelf. All products are organized and priced and a customer can easily find what they’re looking for. It’s not inspirational creatively, but it’s clear and easy to shop.
Visual merchandising adds a creative touch to a display. Displays can tell a story, or inspire the customer to take action with the products displayed. On the right, the fertilizer display tells the story that fall is time for fertilizing and planting. There are instruciton guides on how to use the products, a seed planting schedule, metal art and green goods to solidify the fall theme. The goal here is to inspire the customer to incorporate these products into their own story!
